The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon) and the National Research Council of Science and Technology (Chairman Kim Young-sik) announced that they are publicly recruiting a Program Director (PD) to oversee the ‘AI (Artificial Intelligence) Scientist’ mission of the ‘K-Moonshot Project’. The application period runs from August 7 to August 24, with the final selection and appointment taking place in September.

The ‘AI Scientist’ mission aims to develop, by 2035, an artificial intelligence capable of independently carrying out the entire research cycle, from formulating hypotheses to designing and validating experiments, conducting analysis, and producing research results. The vision is to realize an AI that autonomously performs the full scientific research process traditionally handled by researchers, and it forms part of the ‘Moonshot’ program, which refers to ambitious national-level research and development challenges.

The PD selected through this process will belong to the council’s National AI Research Center for Science (NAIS) and take overall responsibility for the mission. Specifically, the PD will have the authority to lead the entire process required to achieve the mission, including establishing the mission roadmap, planning core research and development (R&D) projects, planning R&D for gap technologies and supporting budget acquisition, selecting, evaluating, managing and monitoring the progress of relevant projects, managing outcomes such as the technology commercialization and spin-off of results, and coordinating cooperation among relevant ministries, dedicated agencies, and industry-academia-research institutions.

The selected PD will be commissioned as a National Special Assignment Researcher of the council and will serve through July 2029. The term is scheduled to begin in September. Detailed application qualifications and required documents can be found in the PD recruitment notice on the website of the National Research Council of Science and Technology (www.nst.re.kr).

This recruitment is significant in that it fully incorporates into the national R&D framework the trend of artificial intelligence expanding beyond an auxiliary tool to become a subject of research in the field. By granting the person leading the mission broad authority spanning planning, budgeting, evaluation, and the commercialization of outcomes, the initiative is seen as an effort to lay the groundwork for research toward long-term goals to be pursued in a consistent manner.
