The National Institute of Animal Science under the Rural Development Administration has launched on-site technical support to help pig farms curb both livestock deaths and barn odor during the ongoing heat wave. On August 11, Cho Yong-min, director of the National Institute of Animal Science, visited Haneul Farm in Sanoe-myeon, Jeongeup, in the Jeonbuk State, to inspect the operation of cooling equipment, odor-reduction facilities and artificial intelligence (AI)-based precision nutrition technology.

On the morning of August 11, Cho Yong-min, director of the National Institute of Animal Science under the Rural Development Administration (led by Administrator Lee Seung-don), visited Haneul Farm (run by Song Yeong-cheol) in Sanoe-myeon, Jeongeup, in the Jeonbuk State, to review how the farm is coping with the heat wave. The visit aimed to prevent livestock deaths during the hot season and to reduce odor generated in the barns, and Director Cho examined the use of pigpen cooling equipment, odor-reduction facilities, and AI-assisted precision nutrition technology for sows.

When high temperatures persist, pigs eat less feed and gain less weight, and the reproductive performance of sows can also be affected. For this reason, it is important during the summer to monitor the pigs’ condition continuously and to operate cooling facilities appropriately according to the ventilation status of each pigpen. In effect, herd management during a heat wave is directly tied to a farm’s productivity.

Haneul Farm, the site of this visit, has installed air conditioners in its farrowing house and laid cooling pads in its gestation and growing-finishing houses to control the temperature inside the pigpens. The pigpen roofs are coated with urethane foam to improve insulation and boost cooling efficiency.

Director Cho also inspected the operation of odor-measuring sensors and an individual deodorizing tower installed under the pilot project titled ‘Pigpen Odor Monitoring and Reduction Technology.’ The deodorizing tower is a facility that washes the air discharged from the barn with water to reduce the spread of odor-causing substances. As livestock odor is a frequent source of friction with nearby residents, such reduction facilities are drawing attention as a way to ease a problem shared by farms and local communities.

Since 2025, this farm has also taken part in a pilot project for a ‘Sow Body-Condition Imaging Diagnosis, AI-Based Precision Nutrition Supply Technology.’ The technology measures a sow’s body condition with a three-dimensional camera and then supplies nutrition and feed to each animal according to its body-condition index, reducing feed waste while helping to manage the sows’ health.

Director Cho listened to a range of the farm’s views, including the state of its cooling-facility management and the technical support it needs on site, and exchanged opinions on the perceived effects of odor reduction and the difficulties of managing the facilities.

Cho Yong-min said, ‘Operating cooling facilities appropriately and managing them meticulously during the hot season is the basis for protecting the health and productivity of pigs,’ adding, ‘Because increased ventilation makes odor easier to spread in this period, we will strengthen on-site technical support for the effective operation of cooling equipment and odor-reduction facilities.’
