According to the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Bae Kyung-hoon), Deputy Prime Minister Bae attended the Physical AI Regional Hub Development Forum held on the afternoon of the 22nd at the headquarters of the Korea Development Bank. The forum was hosted by the Korea Development Bank to support the successful implementation of the physical AI mega-project and to foster a region-based physical AI ecosystem.

The event was attended by Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eok-won, along with local government heads including North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province Governor Lee Won-taek, South Gyeongsang Province Governor Park Wan-su and North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo. Heads of policy financial institutions such as the Korea Development Bank, the Industrial Bank of Korea and the Korea Credit Guarantee Fund, along with heads of regional banks including Jeonbuk Bank, iM Bank and BNK Gyeongnam Bank, as well as officials from physical AI companies, also took part, making it a venue for cooperation spanning regions, finance and industry.

Physical AI is an expanded concept in which artificial intelligence, which used to generate and analyze information on screens, advances to a stage of directly perceiving, judging and acting in the real world. Ahead of the forum, Deputy PM Bae visited a technology demonstration hall, where he personally examined various technologies developed by domestic companies, including a quadruped walking robot, a robotic hand, an autonomous flying drone and a lunar surface exploration robot, and encouraged those involved.

In his congratulatory address, Deputy PM Bae assessed that artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding into physical AI, and said the government is concentrating its capabilities on technology development and industrial ecosystem building by placing it as a key pillar of the nation’s Three Great Leap Mega-Projects. In particular, he said the Ministry of Science and ICT is pursuing the development of core physical AI technologies and field validation in North Jeolla and South Gyeongsang provinces through national research and development (R&D) projects totaling 1.4 trillion won from this year through 2030, and expressed hope that the technologies and validation outcomes accumulated in the two regions will spread to companies and industrial sites nationwide.

Deputy PM Bae stressed, ‘For physical AI to become a new growth engine for our industry, it is important not to stop at technology development but to create a virtuous cycle in which it is continuously validated and advanced at industrial sites, and those achievements, backed by finance, lead to the commercialization, investment and growth of companies.’ He added, ‘The Ministry of Science and ICT will faithfully lay the foundation for securing world-class competitiveness in the physical AI field of the Three Great Mega-Projects, from the development of leading original technologies to field validation and ecosystem expansion, and will actively support efforts to link these outcomes with regional industrial strengths so that they can spread across all of Korea’s industries.’

This forum was significant in that policy financial institutions and regional banks participated together to explore a structure in which the achievements of technology development are backed by financial support. If regions such as North Jeolla and South Gyeongsang establish themselves as hubs for physical AI validation, the commercialization base of local companies is expected to broaden, leading to related industrial jobs and inflows of investment, with ripple effects reaching the local economy as well.
