The Michuhol-gu Housing Welfare Center is running a mobile counseling program that goes out to housing-vulnerable residents, who often miss out on housing welfare information. Counselors travel to welfare facilities across the district to make services easier to reach for residents who have difficulty visiting the center.

The most recent session was held Oct. 7 at the Sungui Community Welfare Center. It was aimed at residents who have trouble getting housing welfare information or getting to and from the center. Counselors from the housing welfare center went to the site to explain housing upgrade support programs and the rental housing system. They also helped residents with everything from move-in consultations to filling out applications in one place.
The counseling focused on residents living in poor housing conditions, such as gosiwon (small single-room lodgings), inns and semi-basement units. Counselors reviewed each resident's current type of housing and individual circumstances, including income and assets, and gave tailored guidance. They presented information on various rental housing options, including jeonse rental housing and purchased rental housing, so that residents could choose the support program that best fits their situation.
Residents who took part responded positively. They learned about housing welfare programs and rental housing application procedures they rarely had access to, and could get help filling out applications on site when needed.
Many residents never get past the application stage even when programs exist, because they cannot get the information or have trouble getting around. For this reason, visiting counseling based at welfare facilities is drawing attention as a way to close gaps in the welfare safety net. The program also carries weight in Michuhol-gu, where demand for better housing conditions in the old downtown area is high, as it is closely tied to residents' daily lives.
"We will continue to provide on-site counseling so that residents can use housing welfare services close to home and move into more stable housing," a district official said.
