The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that the meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and MSIT Minister Bae Kyung-hoon took place in Seoul on October 1, on the occasion of a visit to Korea by Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan.
The meeting served as a follow-up to the ‘Korea-Vietnam Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Master Plan Framework,’ which MSIT and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed together with Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology during a state visit to Vietnam this past April. The framework aims to establish a package-type cooperation system centered on the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST), one that organically links joint research reflecting on-the-ground needs in science and technology with workforce development, the dissemination of results, and infrastructure support.
The two sides praised the framework signed in April and discussed follow-up implementation plans aimed at carrying science and technology cooperation forward into technological and industrial innovation and the cultivation of future talent. Deputy Prime Minister Bae emphasized that the successful operation of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) and the establishment of a cooperation system are important if the two countries’ science and technology partnership is to advance to the next level.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae said, ‘I hope the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) will grow into a hub for science and technology cooperation and establish itself as a full-cycle platform for science and technology innovation that serves the shared prosperity of both nations.’
The meeting demonstrates that cooperation between the two countries through science and technology is expanding beyond one-off exchanges into a full process spanning joint research, talent development, and the dissemination of results. The government plans to accelerate follow-up implementation so that these discussions, in tandem with the national agenda of ‘system innovation to make Korea one of the world’s top five science and technology powers,’ translate into tangible outcomes for industry and for future generations.
