The Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra is launching ‘Brahms in Autumn’, a new series that explores the musical world of Brahms over the long term. The 448th Regular Concert, ‘Brahms of the Incheon Philharmonic’, which opens its prologue, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on October 23 in the Concert Hall of Arts Center Incheon.

‘Brahms in Autumn’ is a project that performs Brahms’s symphonies and concertos in their entirety, one by one each autumn, illuminating the composer’s music from multiple angles. It is an attempt to bind the works into a single musical journey by connecting Brahms’s characteristically contemplative sentiment with the mood of the season. Rather than a one-off performance, it allows audiences to examine one composer in depth across a flow that spans several years, which carries great meaning for local music lovers.

Conducted by Artistic Director Choi Su-yeol, this performance sets itself apart from its very structure. Contrary to the customary practice of placing the concerto first and the symphony afterward, it positions Symphony No. 3 in the first half and Piano Concerto No. 2 in the second half, creating an unusual contrast.

Symphony No. 3 in the first half is a work in which powerful themes and lyrical melodies intertwine, and it is the only one among Brahms’s four symphonies to conclude quietly. The Piano Concerto No. 2 that follows in the second half is the most monumental in scale among Brahms’s concertos, with the piano and orchestra breathing closely together to unfold a grand scope. Through the contrast from a contemplative first half to a second half of immense flow, the concert reveals the wide-ranging facets of Brahms’s music in a single setting.

The featured soloist is Incheon-born pianist Ahn Jong-do. Active in many fields as a pianist, harpsichordist, columnist, and music director, he made his name on the European stage at the 2012 Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Piano Competition, where he won second prize with no first prize awarded, along with the prizes for best soloist and best interpretation of a contemporary work. He has since performed with the London Symphony, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the KBS Symphony Orchestra, among others.

One day before the main performance, at 7:30 p.m. on October 22, the special concert ‘Music in Process III’ will be held first. Conducted as an open rehearsal in which the Incheon Philharmonic refines Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, it allows the audience to watch up close as the work on stage takes shape.

All seats for the 448th Regular Concert, ‘Brahms of the Incheon Philharmonic’, are priced at 10,000 won, and reservations can be made through the Incheon Culture and Arts Center, the Arts Center Incheon website, N-ticket, and NOL Ticket.
