The Songdo 3-dong Community Social Security Council (Co-chairs Ahn Sung-soon and Kim Jung-rak) in Yeonsu-gu District, Incheon, has launched the "Songsam Health Pharmacy Support Project," which provides home first-aid kits to 30 households struggling to manage their health, including seniors living alone. The council began the support by holding a handover ceremony on the 15th.

The project is funded with 1.86 million won the council secured through a grant program run by the Korea Gas Corporation's Incheon LNG Terminal. Under this arrangement, grant funding from a local public institution reaches households in need through a neighborhood-level residents' organization.

Recipients include low-income seniors living alone and elderly couples. The project aims to equip vulnerable residents who find it difficult to look after their health, whether because of physical limitations or because they have no family nearby to care for them, with basic first-aid supplies they can use at home right away.

The kits are delivered in person. Council members plan to visit the recipient households one by one through the end of October to hand over the kits and check on the seniors' well-being, health and living conditions.

If the visits identify households that need further assistance, the council plans to work with the local administrative welfare center to provide welfare services tailored to each household's situation. The idea is to go beyond a one-time delivery of supplies and serve as a channel linking residents to the public welfare system.

The significance of the project lies more in the visits than in the supplies. Resident council members knocking on doors and checking on seniors' daily lives in person serves as a way to detect neighbors in crisis early. The project is drawing attention for strengthening the neighborhood-level care network as the number of elderly people living alone grows.

"We hope this project will help vulnerable seniors manage their health," the Songdo 3-dong Community Social Security Council said. "We will continue to look carefully after neighbors in need in our community and keep developing welfare programs that residents can feel make a difference."
