Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the National Data Agency (led by Commissioner Ahn Hyung-jun) is launching a daily price survey to monitor fluctuations in the prices of holiday goods on a daily basis. The survey results will be shared with policy ministries in real time and used to develop the government’s measures to stabilize supply and demand and to ease the burden on people’s livelihoods.

The National Data Agency announced that it will conduct a daily price survey for the Chuseok holiday over 10 days, from September 10 to 23. The survey aims to track price trends in holiday goods in real time so that the government can put supply-and-demand stabilization measures in place at the right time, providing the baseline data needed to do so.

A total of 36 major items are covered, including representative holiday goods such as beef and croaker. Specifically, they comprise 24 agricultural, livestock and fishery products—including apples, pears, chestnuts, beef, eggs and croaker—along with 5 processed foods such as flour, tofu and cooking oil, 3 petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene, and 4 dining-out items such as pork belly and chicken. A notable feature is that the survey broadly covers items directly tied to ordinary people’s lives, ranging from the food that appears on the holiday table to the cost of fuel for travel and dining-out expenses.

The survey will be carried out in seven metropolitan cities, including Seoul and Busan, combining in-person (interview) surveys in which enumerators visit stores directly with online surveys. The National Data Agency plans to share the resulting data with policy ministries each day to enhance the effectiveness of price management. Since the prices of holiday goods tend to rise as demand concentrates in the run-up to the holiday, the close daily survey will help detect early signs of price surges and move up the timing of a response.

Ahead of the survey, National Data Agency Commissioner Ahn Hyung-jun visited Namguro Market in Seoul on September 8 to inspect firsthand the price trends of major holiday goods such as apples and pears. There, Ahn visited the surveyed establishments (stores) that have actively cooperated with the consumer price survey to express his gratitude, engaging in on-site communication aimed at producing highly reliable statistics.

Ahn stressed, ‘The precise data obtained through the daily price survey will serve as key baseline material for stabilizing the supply and demand of Chuseok holiday goods and for establishing effective price policies,’ adding, ‘We will continue to do our utmost to provide accurate and timely statistical services that the public can feel in their daily lives.’
