This special screening presents two films: "The Piano," winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and "Hula Girls," which returns in a 4K remaster to mark the 20th anniversary of its release. Audiences will be able to enjoy both works with finer visuals and sound than before.
"The Piano" is a signature work by director Jane Campion and was the first film by a female director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It took both the Palme d'Or and the Best Actress award at the 46th Cannes Film Festival and won three Academy Awards, earning acclaim for its artistry at the world's leading film festivals. This screening offers a chance to appreciate Michael Nyman's music in the theater once again, alongside the film's outstanding visual beauty.
"Hula Girls" is based on a true story from a Japanese coal-mining town in the 1960s, portraying girls who take up hula dancing to save their village from the threat of a mine closure. Regarded as a signature work by Zainichi Korean director Lee Sang-il, this special screening marks the first domestic release of the 4K remastered director's cut version commemorating the 20th anniversary of its release. The extended cut runs about 10 minutes longer than the original theatrical version.
