Jemulpo-gu District (Mayor Kim Chan-jin) in Incheon has won external recognition for its performance in safety and welfare administration in a nationwide city competitiveness evaluation covering local governments across the country. Jemulpo-gu announced on the 27th that it received the grand prize in the national safety and welfare city category at the '2026 Global City Brand Grand Prize' awards ceremony held on the 26th at Ferrum Tower in Seoul.

The award, hosted by SisaJournal and sponsored by the Korean Association for Local Government Studies, is a citation program that comprehensively evaluates the value and competitiveness of cities among local governments nationwide to select outstanding municipalities.

According to the results of the evaluation, Jemulpo-gu was said to have received high marks for enhancing its urban competitiveness by implementing a range of community-oriented safety and welfare policies closely tied to residents' daily lives.

In the welfare category, the district was recognized for reinforcing its public care system in response to Korea's entry into a super-aged society and for expanding health and welfare services that proactively reach out to vulnerable residents with limited mobility. Through these efforts, the district was assessed as having built a tightly knit social safety net.

In the safety category, the district introduced an AI-based intelligent CCTV control system and smart safety management system, and applied Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) techniques, focusing its efforts on creating a safe urban environment that residents can tangibly feel.

This award carries particular significance as it marks Jemulpo-gu's first external achievement since its launch, following the integration of the former inland area of Jung-gu District and the former Dong-gu District on July 1. The fact that the newly formed autonomous district has had its policy capacity validated in both the safety and welfare sectors is expected to give momentum to its administrative operations going forward.

Jemulpo-gu Mayor Kim Chan-jin said, "This award is a valuable achievement made possible by the support of all residents who wholeheartedly cheered on Jemulpo-gu's new beginning, together with the dedication of every public official who worked on the ground." He added, "We will continue to do our best to ensure residents can feel tangible changes in their daily lives, and to complete Jemulpo-gu's transformation into Korea's leading safety and welfare city, where everyone can live with peace of mind."

Having received this grand prize just over two months after its integrated launch, Jemulpo-gu's safety and welfare policies have now gained external recognition, and the district is expected to expand related programs and continue the sustained implementation of these policies.
