The Gwacheon National Science Museum is carrying out its ‘Again ON Exhibits’ project, relocating 10 exhibits that have completed their role in the museum’s display space to four institutions, including the Gangseo Starlight Space Science Museum, so they can be shown again. It is a virtuous cycle that revives science exhibition resources, which might otherwise have been discarded, as exhibition and education assets for other institutions.

The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Chung-won) announced that it is carrying out its ‘Again ON Exhibits’ project, which relocates exhibits that have finished their use in the existing display space to new institutions so they can be exhibited once more.

The project began in 2023. The Gwacheon National Science Museum introduces the exhibits it holds to institutions that need them and, upon receiving applications from interested institutions, transfers the items. Over three years it has moved a total of 53 exhibits to new institutions this way. Now in its fourth year, the museum plans to transfer 10 exhibits, including ‘Same Volume, Different Weight’, to four institutions such as the Gangseo Starlight Space Science Museum.

In particular, a ‘Ribbon Day’ will be held on September 2. At the event, a ribbon is tied on each exhibit set for new use, as if it were a gift, before it is sent to its new institution — carrying the meaning that the exhibit meets new visitors in a different space and is reborn (Re:born).

The exhibits being transferred this time include ‘Do Gases Have Color? (2)’ going to the National Miryang Meteorological Science Museum; ‘What Is the Standard for Dividing Elements? (2)’ and ‘Why Does an Object Appear to Float? (2)’ going to the Gumi Science Museum; ‘How Do We Use the Power of Air?’, ‘Light and Sound in a Vacuum’, and ‘Fine Dust — Is It Dust Carried on the Wind?’ going to the Jeju Aerospace Museum; and ‘What Is the Standard for Dividing Elements? (3)’, ‘Same Volume, Different Weight’, ‘What Happens When Light Meets a Lens?’, and ‘What Properties Does Light Have? (1)’ going to the Gangseo Starlight Space Science Museum. The transfer dates vary by institution.

The significance of the project does not lie in the mere transfer of items. Local science museums and museums operating on limited budgets find it difficult to acquire new exhibits, but through this project they gain proven science exhibits, broadening the range of science and cultural content that local visitors can encounter. The Gwacheon National Science Museum, for its part, extends the lifespan of its resources by sharing exhibits it has finished using with other institutions rather than discarding them.

The Gwacheon National Science Museum expects that this will further expand the virtuous cycle created by sharing exhibition resources among institutions.

Director Lee Chung-won said, ‘An exhibit leaving the display space does not mean its value has ended; it can create another story in a new space,’ adding, ‘We will continue to expand opportunities to share and make use of exhibition resources with a variety of institutions, carrying on the value of our exhibits.’
