The Rural Development Administration (Administrator Lee Seung-don) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Information Farmers Association (KIFA) at its headquarters on August 25 to promote farmers’ use of artificial intelligence (AI) and encourage income growth.
The agreement comes against the backdrop of rising interest in and demand for artificial intelligence in the agricultural field. It reflects the view that, for artificial intelligence to be of real help in farming and management, the people who can handle it and the education to support them matter more than the technology itself. The two organizations pursued the agreement to build a field-centered education and support system that allows farmers to easily apply artificial intelligence across their farming and management.

Under the agreement, the two organizations will cooperate on training ‘AI Farming Leaders,’ who serve as field instructors for artificial intelligence education; providing specialized consulting on management diagnostics and sales promotion based on artificial intelligence and data; supporting the spread of AI use among local farmers; and gathering field opinions to improve artificial intelligence farming education and services. To this end, they plan to form an ‘Artificial Intelligence Farming Education Council’ and to raise farmers’ capabilities by linking the Rural Development Administration’s agricultural technology and its artificial intelligence and data capacities with KIFA’s network of farmers.
In particular, through management diagnostics and tailored prescriptions using artificial intelligence and data, the initiative will help farmers strengthen their competitiveness across the entire process, from producing agricultural goods to selling them. The aim is to ensure that new technology does not remain confined to a few advanced farms but actually translates into income.

The Rural Development Administration plans to train the ‘AI Farming Leaders’ on various artificial intelligence services, including the public-facing AI farming assistant ‘AI Isaki,’ and to have them help local farmers make use of artificial intelligence. It will also work with city and county agricultural technology centers so that the ‘AI Farming Leaders’ can take part and be active in local farmer education programs such as the New Year practical farmer training and farmer universities. It is expected that combining the Rural Development Administration’s artificial intelligence technology and educational capabilities with KIFA’s field network will establish an artificial intelligence education and support system centered on local farmers.
