The Incheon Metropolitan Government held a talk concert to help older adults nearing retirement engage with society and design the second act of their lives. By combining a documentary film screening with a talk show, the event offered an occasion to view life after retirement not as a ‘stop’ but as an ‘expansion of one’s role as a senior citizen.’

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it held the 「Older Adults’ Second Act of Life Talk Concert」 on September 2 at the multipurpose hall of the Teum Cultural Creation Zone. The event was arranged to support the healthy social participation of older adults and the successful planning of their second act of life.

Hosted by the City of Incheon and organized by the Incheon YWCA, the event was carried out as part of a gender equality fund project. Around 150 citizens aged 50 to 64 — older adults and prospective older adults who are nearing retirement or facing a turning point in life — attended.

Rather than following a one-way lecture format, the event combined a human documentary film screening, a talk show, and expert presentations. In the first part, Yoo Hae-sook, president of the Senior Citizens Association, delivered a keynote presentation on the findings of a survey on older adults’ perceptions and continued with a lecture on the theme of ‘reflection for a dignified and abundant old age.’

In the second part, the documentary film by director Jin Jae-woon was screened. The work portrays the life of a woman who devoted herself to future generations and the community by planting one million trees over her lifetime, and it is an acclaimed piece that won three awards at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards. Through the film, participants had the opportunity to view life after retirement not as a mere ‘stop’ but from the perspective of ‘an expansion into a new social role as a senior citizen.’

The ensuing talk concert brought together director Jin Jae-woon, citizen panelists, and the audience in one place. They shared a range of views and sought solutions on topics such as the shift in gender roles across work, family, and caregiving; gender-equal retirement planning; and the role of senior citizens within the local community.

The City of Incheon expects that the talk concert will raise older adults’ awareness of gender equality and their retirement-planning capabilities, and will bring about a shift in perceptions of gender roles within the family, such as housework and caregiving. The city also anticipates that, by encouraging active social participation after retirement, the event will lay the groundwork for spreading a sustainable culture of a gender-equal second act of life throughout the community.

Nam Young-hee, Vice Mayor for Balanced Development, said, ‘I hope this talk concert allowed older adults to reflect deeply on the lives they have led and to newly design their own value and social roles from a gender-equal perspective,’ adding, ‘We will continue to spare no support so that the rich experience and wisdom of older adults can shine throughout every corner of our community.’
