The government has announced that it will steadily operate its discount support program for agricultural and livestock products under the Chuseok livelihood stabilization measures, without terminating it early. It explained that the decision not to apply a discount cap is intended to minimize the burden on the public shopping basket during the Chuseok holiday.

The government stated that, regarding its decision under the Chuseok livelihood stabilization measures not to apply a cap on discounts for agricultural and livestock products, it plans to operate the discount support program steadily without an early termination.
This explanation came in response to a report published on September 9, 2026, by the Seoul Economic Daily under the headline ‘Abolition of Farm-Product Discount Limits.. Concerns Over a Hanwoo Open Run.’ The report pointed out that, by abolishing the cap on farm and livestock product discounts through supplementary measures to the Chuseok livelihood stabilization plan, the government was raising concerns about an ‘open run’ on high-priced items such as beef.

In response, the government emphasized that its decision under the Chuseok livelihood stabilization measures not to apply a discount cap is aimed at minimizing the burden on the public shopping basket during the Chuseok period.

The government explained that, because the discount events take place at retail outlets such as marts and direct-sales stores, it judges the possibility of bulk purchasing to be limited. It also said that, through cooperation with distribution companies, it is fully prepared to address cases of misuse of the discount support, such as hoarding.
The government’s measure is intended to ease the burden of food prices ahead of the peak Chuseok season, with the focus placed on steadily maintaining the discount benefits that actually reach consumers, rather than on concerns over a concentration on high-priced items or hoarding. The government asked the media to exercise caution in related reporting.
