‘2026 Island:Presso’, a flagship cultural program that Ganghwa-gun is promoting so that residents can enjoy culture close to their daily lives, unveiled its September performance. Held on the 12th at the Ganghwa Astronomy Science Museum, this stage was presented as the participatory sock puppet show ‘The Adventures of Don Quixote’.
The performance is a reimagining of Cervantes’ classic masterpiece ‘Don Quixote de la Mancha’ as a sock puppet show. By telling the story at the eye level of children and family audiences, it delivered both entertainment and the original work’s lessons of courage and challenge in a natural way.
What set the stage apart was that it went beyond simple viewing. Children and parents in the audience sang along with the performers and took part directly in the play, drawing an enthusiastic response from all participants. Songs arranged from folk tunes of countries around the world blended with intriguing adventure episodes, helping children understand the work while offering the families in attendance a special evening.
‘2026 Island:Presso’ continues every Saturday through next month at local landmarks. Artists from the Ganghwa area present a variety of cultural performances, including theater and busking, giving residents and visitors the chance to enjoy the benefits of culture within their everyday radius. In that people can encounter quality performances near their homes without having to seek out a separate cultural facility, the program is regarded as an initiative that narrows regional gaps in access to culture.
County Mayor Park Yong-cheol said, ‘It was a time for children and families to enjoy the performance together and naturally feel the meaning of the courage and challenge that Don Quixote shows in the classic.’ He added, ‘Through Island:Presso and various other cultural programs, we will continue to help residents enjoy culture close to their daily lives and build a Ganghwa-gun made happy by culture.’
