Yeongjong-gu District (Mayor Son Hwa-jeong) in Incheon has launched the "1st Women-Friendly City Citizen Panel," which will examine everyday inconveniences from residents' perspectives and propose policies. On the 7th, the district held a commissioning ceremony at the main auditorium of the Yeongjong-gu District Office and presented certificates of appointment to 28 members selected through open recruitment. The event marks the start of full-scale activities to build an inclusive city where everyone can live safely.

The citizen panel was established as a communication channel to hear the community's voices directly and reflect them in policy. Members will inspect public facilities and other sites in the district from a gender-sensitive perspective and from the perspective of the socially vulnerable, collect residents' opinions, and seek ways to improve imbalances and inconveniences hidden in daily life. They will also propose related policies and serve as policy partners working with the district to build an inclusive city.

The first-term members will serve three years, from October this year to October 2029. With such a relatively long term guaranteed, the panel's monitoring and proposals are expected to continue beyond one-off inspections.

Following the ceremony, the district also provided members with capacity-building training on gender-sensitive monitoring of government publicity materials. Han Kyung-heon, head of the Gonggam n Policy Institute, served as instructor and lectured on techniques for monitoring government publicity materials from a gender-sensitive perspective. Members will begin full-scale activities with this training as a starting point.

Yeongjong-gu Mayor Son Hwa-jeong said, "I hope the citizen panel will play a central role in identifying policies that allow all residents, including socially vulnerable groups such as women, the elderly, people with disabilities and children, to feel safe and comfortable in their daily lives."

She added, "We will actively reflect vivid voices from the field and candid suggestions in district administration, and create a warm Yeongjong-gu where no one is left out and everyone lives together."

With the launch of the citizen panel, Yeongjong-gu has put in place a channel through which residents can directly identify everyday inconveniences that administrators tend to overlook and link them to policy. How much the members' proposals are actually reflected in district administration is expected to determine the effectiveness of the district's women-friendly city policies.
