The Incheon Metropolitan City Institute of Public Health and Environment has independently developed and demonstrated an ‘Integrated Noise Analysis Platform’ that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically classify noise sources and visualize environmental noise measurement data on a map. By analyzing not only ‘how loud’ a noise is but also ‘what kind of sound is occurring,’ the platform is expected to make responses to residents’ noise complaints considerably more precise.

The Incheon Metropolitan City Institute of Public Health and Environment (Director Kim Myung-hee) has developed an ‘Integrated Noise Analysis Platform’ incorporating generative AI and held a demonstration event.

The platform is distinguished by providing AI-based automatic classification of noise sources and map-based analysis of environmental noise measurement data together on a single platform. Whereas conventional noise management focused on numerically confirming ‘how loud a noise is,’ this platform uses AI trained on noise-source data to analyze ‘what kind of sound is occurring’ and visualizes environmental noise measurement data on a map, making it easy to grasp noise characteristics by region and time of day.

This is significant in that it allows the causes of complaints to be identified more concretely from the standpoint of residents exposed to noise, enabling responses tailored to specific regions and time periods. In effect, a foundation has been laid for resolving everyday noise disputes—which were difficult to explain by loudness alone—by identifying the type of sound and its point of origin together.

The platform was independently developed by the Institute of Public Health and Environment using generative AI, drawing on its practical experience in noise-related work. Researchers themselves designed the analysis functions they needed and then implemented those functions through repeated dialogue and feedback with the generative AI—the first case of applying generative AI to environmental research and administrative work.

The Institute plans to continuously refine the platform’s functions by reflecting field opinions raised at this demonstration, and to develop it into an Incheon-style analysis tool that provides practical help in responding to noise complaints. It also intends to apply AI technology not only to the noise field but also to data analysis and work across various environmental fields, thereby enhancing the analytical capacity of environmental research and strengthening the provision of environmental administrative services based on scientific evidence.

Kim Myung-hee, Director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Institute of Public Health and Environment, said, ‘This demonstration is meaningful in that we applied a platform self-developed using generative AI to actual noise work and implemented it so that anyone can easily check the analysis results,’ adding, ‘We will continue to develop it into a platform that provides practical help in noise management and complaint handling by reflecting diverse opinions from the field.’
