The Sungui Public Health Branch Office of Michuhol-gu District (Mayor Kim Jung-sik), Incheon, will hold a "Couples' Prenatal Health Care Class" every Saturday from Oct. 17 to Nov. 7. The class is open to women who are at least 16 weeks pregnant and their husbands. It was organized so that dual-income expectant parents who find it difficult to take time off on weekdays can prepare for childbirth together on weekends.

This class is the last couples' yoga class to be held this year. Its purpose is to help expectant parents who cannot easily attend weekday programs exercise together on weekends and prepare for a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.
Sessions will run for four weeks, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Saturday, in the health education room on the fifth floor of the Sungui Public Health Branch Office. Enrollment is limited to 12 couples. Because the class is small, instruction is expected to be tailored to each participant's condition.
The curriculum was designed with the physical changes of pregnancy in mind. Built around yoga poses and stretches suited to pregnant women's physical condition, it also includes light strength training and relaxation exercises to relieve tension. Husbands will follow the same movements, allowing them to understand their wives' physical condition firsthand.
The branch office expects the class to help ease physical discomfort that can arise during pregnancy and to build flexibility and muscle strength. It also expects that exercising together will help couples strengthen their bond and spend the pregnancy in a positive way. The program treats preparing for childbirth not as something the mother does alone, but as something the couple does together.
An official from the Sungui Public Health Branch Office said, "We hope expectant parents will connect physically and emotionally and spend their pregnancy in a healthier and more meaningful way."
There is no participation fee. Couples who wish to take part can apply through the Michuhol-gu District integrated reservation portal. With enrollment capped at 12 couples, early application is recommended. For more information, contact the maternal and child health office of the Sungui Public Health Branch Office (☎032-880-5772).
