The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) has launched advance safety inspections in the food and beverage, lodging and fire-safety sectors ahead of the 24th World Korean Business Convention, to be held at Songdo Convensia from Sept. 28 to 30. The city plans to keep an on-site response system running throughout the event so that visitors from home and abroad can take part with peace of mind.

With a large-scale international event drawing overseas Korean business leaders and entrepreneurs approaching, the Incheon government has made visitor safety its top priority. The convention will be held around the Songdo Convensia complex from Sept. 28 to 30, featuring business exchanges as well as investment and export consultations.

Ahead of the convention, the city inspected 72 lodging establishments in the area for compliance with hygiene management requirements. It is also conducting hygiene inspections along with food-safety education and outreach for food and beverage facilities at the venue and nearby food-service businesses. The aim is to prevent food-safety incidents such as food poisoning in advance, given that a large number of people will gather in one place.

In the fire-safety sector, the city will conduct an advance inspection of the fire-safety management status of Songdo Convensia together with the Songdo Fire Station on Sept. 22. It plans to examine the venue’s firefighting facilities and safety-management conditions and to check the response system prepared for emergencies such as fires.

Preparations for the personnel who will support the event’s operation have also been completed. On Sept. 18, the city held advance training for volunteers made up of some 50 students from Incheon National University (Incheon University) and ordinary citizens, briefing them on work procedures, on-site roles and the contact system in case of emergencies. The measure is intended to ensure that visitor guidance and venue operations run smoothly.

During the convention, the city will operate a hygiene-management situation room for food, beverage and lodging establishments to respond swiftly to hygiene-related complaints and food-safety incidents, and will maintain close cooperation with fire authorities in preparation for fires and emergencies.

Kim Young-shin, director-general of the city’s International Cooperation Bureau, said, ‘We are carrying out sector-by-sector safety inspections ahead of the event so that visitors from home and abroad can enjoy the World Korean Business Convention with peace of mind,’ adding, ‘Throughout the event, we will cooperate closely with relevant agencies and do our utmost to run a safe and comfortable event.’

This safety-management effort is expected to go beyond a mere administrative check and serve as an opportunity to impress the city’s reliability upon domestic and international visitors to Incheon. That is because the results of business exchanges can be sustained on a stable footing only when basic safety measures such as hygiene and fire prevention are firmly in place.
