The Korea Emigration History Museum in Incheon will run an educational program titled ‘The Gaelic Grand Adventure, Together’ for groups of preschoolers from October 13 to December 10. Using the first emigrant ship, the Gaelic, as its centerpiece, the hands-on program brings Korea’s history of emigration to life at a child’s eye level.

The Korea Emigration History Museum in Incheon (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it will run ‘The Gaelic Grand Adventure, Together’, an educational program for groups of preschoolers, from October 13 to December 10.
Built around the idea of setting sail for a new world aboard the Gaelic, the first emigrant ship, the program invites children to explore Korea’s history of emigration. Participating children become members of the Gaelic expedition crew and follow the lives and stories of emigrants who left for destinations such as Hawaii, Mexico and Germany.
The program covers the stories of Korean emigrants bound for each region, tailored to a child’s level of understanding: the lives of emigrants who worked in Hawaii’s sugarcane fields, life on the henequen plantations of Mexico, and the work of miners and nurses dispatched to Germany. A defining feature is the way it reshapes a subject often seen as unfamiliar and difficult into a form that young peers can grasp.
Hands-on activities include a program in which children use fabric markers to decorate their own version of the Gaelic, the ship the emigrants boarded, and make a pouch. Through the process of decorating the Gaelic, children become familiar with Korea’s history of emigration and naturally reflect on what they have learned. Because it involves making something by hand and taking the result home rather than simply viewing an exhibit, the activity is expected to help children remember what they learned for a long time.
The program runs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings each week and is offered to groups of preschoolers. Applications will be accepted from Wednesday, September 9 to Wednesday, September 30 through the integrated reservation system on the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum website, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Park Man-soon, director of the Korea Emigration History Museum, said, ‘Through this program, we hope children will come to understand, easily and enjoyably, the history of our emigration that unfolded aboard the Gaelic, and that it will spark their interest in that history.’
